As founder of Foster + Partners, Sir Norman Foster is often associated with large projects such as skyscrapers and football stadiums, but in his latest design he has turned to something much more modest. In collaboration with sustainable construction company Holcim, the famous British architect has created a small concrete shelter that offers a safe and resilient temporary home to displaced people The Essential Homes Research Project is currently in the prototype phase and is on display at this year's Venice Architecture Biennale. Structurally, it consists of Phone Number List rolled concrete sheets on the outside, as well as thermal insulation and wood, while the base is made of recycled construction materials from demolitions . It connects to other units through concrete paths that contain luminescent aggregates so that they glow dimly at night. Once the shelter reaches the end of its useful life, it can be reused or recycled with relative ease. The retreat is topped by four skylights that maximize natural light inside, and features a glass-enclosed entrance and patio. Its interior measures m and combines comfort and durability with a utilitarian decoration of wood and concrete. It has three beds, shelves and wardrobes, plus some seats and a dining table, as well as a bathroom with toilet, shower and sink. In addition, the concept drawings also show a kitchen, and photovoltaic solar panels can be added to the roof to supply power. How can we ensure that everyone, including some of the most vulnerable populations, has access to decent living conditions? During the Venice Biennale we showed our ongoing work on this idea; the result of a few months of intense activity in collaboration with Holcim.
